Jun 16, 2014

Hello Folks:
When I was in high school in Bloomington, there was a little band of seniors who were dissatisfied with the culinary offerings of our cafeteria. Imagine that! We made an attempt to convince our counselor that this was a situation the needed remedying with some sense of urgency but to no avail. Our solution was to initiate lunchtime potluck. At the onset the offerings and attendance was meager at best. But, we grew in numbers and creative cuisine every week until at our zenith, we filled 4 cafeteria tables with homemade goodies and a multitude of pride. It was during our high school potluck days that I first experienced a pomegranate.

Being a college town, we had a good diversity in cultures and those classmates were happy to share the food of their families:  tabouli, crepes, Shepherd pie, lasagna. We were fortunate to have had a little idea and the guts to manifest it. That is how I feel about Duos. It is very tricky to bring real, homemade, honest food to folks at a price that is accessible to everyone while still supporting our local producers. We are fortunate indeed. You support us and we support you. Enough rambling.
Also look for the truck this Thursday at the Statehouse Market!

We are flush with so many lovely goodies from our Farmers: cucumbers, lettuce, kale, radishes, arugula, asparagus, rhubarb and soon tomatoes. It just makes us rather giddy when the season starts off with a bang. We walk this very fine line of taking accessibility to local and handcrafted foods, very seriously. We make every effort to keep the price affordable and still offer you (and support our farmers) the best Indiana gardens have to offer as well as a creative and stimulating menu.  This year, a number of our producers have helped us with pricing that works for them and still gives us access at a cost that works for our customer.

Saturday, May 31st from 11-2 Duos Mobile will be joining our other food truck family members at Pop Con on Georgia Street. Indy PopCon is a popular culture convention that is primarily Hoosier born and conceived.  A good time will be had by all and you can find out more at: indypopcon.com.  We hope to see and serve you.

From Chef Becky:
When I was 16, my Uncle Robert and his beautiful French wife, Paulette, took me to Europe with them for the Summer.  We toured Switzerland, Austria, Italy but the highlight was Aunt Paulette's little village in the French Alps. After the wild mountain drive we pulled up to the ancient stone house of her family and there in the cherry tree, was Mama, Aunt Paulette's Mother, 76 years old, picking cherries for our dessert. The yard was a garden. Resplendent in bitter salad greens, radishes, sorrel. No grass, just garden. Mama was a magical cook. Rubbing the worn wooden bowl with garlic, tossing the freshly picked greens with vinegar, olive oil and pungent mustard.  Storing beautiful cheeses under a dome on a worn board. Peasant Soup made of beautiful chicken stock, garden greens, pasta....finished with grated hard cheese. These are some of the memories that I carry. They stay with me and guide my approach to cooking and life.

Now...at Eskenazi Health this week(beginning Tuesday), we will be offering a locally grown Tuscan Kale Salad with Miso Dressing, Apricots and Feta as well as a Spring Flirt Sandwich with Local Arugula, Apple, Cheese, Onion and Tomato (one of my favorites!). Then, by Wednesday, the Balance Bowl will arrive! Yippeee! View our current Eskenazi Health menu on this document. Menus may vary.

Hello Beautiful Friends:

We are so lucky. That is that. We are honored to be a part of your lives and learn from each and every one of you each and every day.

So at Eskenazi, we encourage you to bike or stroll but if a car is needed, there is ample parking in the garage. We are the happy little glass building in the front of the Hospital in the Commonground area. We're going to play with the menu. We are also learning the needs of the community more and more each day. We want to serve breakfast (right now we have continental style). So you guys want breakfast? If so, share ideas with us and let us know the time that you need to come in. Oatmeal, Breakfast Sandwich, Burrito???

At The Kitchen, we are making a few changes and additions to the menu: Carnitas over Roasted Sweet Potato with Salsa Verde, Throwback 70's Swiss Steak, Southwest Tempeh Salad, and my personal favorite: Breakfast Sandwich with Eggs, Goat Cheese and Ramps (very limited season, so enjoy while they last)!

And, a couple of events next week that promise to be delightful. First Friday, May 2nd, at the Harrison Center for the Arts (15th and Delaware) we will be there from 5-8ish.  Saturday, May 3rd, 5pm, Cottage Home BASHMENT BASH.  Reggae, wine, beer and Duos will be vending.  $5 gets you in and all the proceeds go to maintain the Cottage Home playground. 700 block of Dorman street. You can find more info on Facebook. We promise some smashing good Caribbean cuisine.

Dear Folks:

Okay, Duos Mobile is coming out on the streets for a little while to be there and share while we await our satellite location at Eskenazi to bust a move! We are planning on being at Eskenazi Hospital Tuesday and Friday. We will be serving Balance Bowls For ALL!!!

Next week we will be making some lovely Corned Beef Hash for your breakfast pleasure. Carne Asada Tacos will finally make their appearance on the menu.
